Wildfire Closes U.S. Highway 50 in Western Colorado

A new wildfire broke out Sunday in Montrose County, forcing the closure of U.S. Highway 50 near mile marker 1021.

Dubbed the Kinikin Fire, the blaze has led officials to direct traffic to Highway 92 as an alternate route, according to the Gunnison Regional 911 Center. It’s unclear when the highway will reopen.

The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control confirmed that an aircraft has been dispatched to assist, and resources previously assigned to the South Rim Fire are now being redirected to help contain the Kinikin Fire.
