Scooter Rider Accused of Running Red Light, Causing Crash in South Colorado Springs

A scooter rider is accused of running a red light and causing a crash Sunday afternoon in southern Colorado Springs.

Police responded just after 4:30 p.m. to the area near I-25 and South Circle Drive. The crash occurred on Lake Avenue at the southbound I-25 off-ramp.

According to investigators, the rider was traveling west on Lake Avenue and reportedly ran a red light, colliding with a vehicle coming eastbound from the off-ramp, which had a green light.

The rider, identified as Geramiah Vargas, sustained a serious injury and was taken to the hospital. He was cited for multiple traffic violations.

Police said neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crash.

Westbound Circle/Lake and the southbound off-ramp to eastbound Lake were closed for nearly an hour but have since reopened.
