Car Thefts Drop in Colorado, But Officials Say ‘Don’t Let Your Guard Down’

Vehicle thefts in Colorado are finally trending downward after years of sharp increases, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

In 2023, the state reported 32,976 stolen vehicles. So far in 2024, that number is down to 25,200. While the decrease is encouraging, CSP warns that auto theft prevention is far from over, emphasizing the ultimate goal: zero thefts.

One of the biggest contributors to theft? Unlocked vehicles. CSP says 40% to 50% of stolen car reports involve cars that were left unlocked, often because drivers simply assumed they locked the doors.

July is Auto Theft Prevention Month

To combat theft, CSP is promoting several programs and safety measures:

  • Keep your car clean: A clutter-free vehicle is less appealing to thieves.

  • Use a steering wheel lock: These visible deterrents are highly effective, and CSP offers them free to Colorado residents with proof of registration and insurance.

Free Steering Wheel Locks Are Available At:

  • Lakewood: 700 Kipling St. #3000

  • Castle Rock: 4600 Castleton Ct.

  • Fort Collins: 3832 South I-25
    Visit Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

CSP also recommends placing AirTags or tracking devices in your vehicle for quick recovery — but never chase after a stolen car.

“Auto theft is often just the beginning,” said Cale Gould, Public Outreach Coordinator for the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority. “It frequently leads to more serious crimes involving weapons, drugs, and violence — posing serious risks to law enforcement and the public.”

Despite the risks, 82% of stolen vehicles are recovered within the first month, CSP reports.

If your car is stolen, CSP encourages using its Vehicle Assistance Program, which can help cover insurance deductibles, towing fees, impound costs, vehicle repairs, and even transportation.

Stay alert, lock up, and take advantage of the tools available — prevention is key.
