The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) has arrested two men in connection with separate road rage incidents involving gunfire along E-470 earlier this month.
The first incident occurred on July 6, when a driver heading northbound on E-470 toward Denver International Airport was shot at after merging in front of a black BMW SUV. The suspect failed to yield and then allegedly opened fire before fleeing. The victim reported the incident from home, and surveillance footage from E-470 cameras helped identify the vehicle and suspect.
On July 17, CSP located the BMW at the suspect’s workplace and arrested Benjamin C. L. Roberts, who was booked into the Arapahoe County Jail on first-degree assault charges.
The second road rage incident happened just two days later on July 8, near the Gartrell Road exit. A victim reported that the driver of a gray RAM pickup truck fired shots during a confrontation. Troopers discovered the RAM had fictitious plates, but it was known to frequently travel E-470.
On July 9, CSP stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver, Kip D. Boyer, who admitted to the shooting. He was also booked on first-degree assault charges at the Arapahoe County Jail.
CSP urges all drivers to stay calm and avoid confrontations. If you encounter an aggressive driver:
-
Create distance between vehicles,
-
Avoid eye contact, and
-
Call CSP once you’re in a safe location.
“Drive with focus and remain calm on the roadway,” the agency advised.
