Ameren Missouri Gas Bills to Rise by 12% Starting in September

ST. LOUIS — Beginning September 1, Ameren Missouri customers will see an average 12% increase—about $13 more per month—on their gas bills, following approval by the Missouri Public Service Commission.

Critics say the hike is hitting families hard.
“This kind of increase is outpacing both inflation and wage growth,” said John Coffman with the Consumers Council of Missouri. “It’s fueling inflation across the board because every household and business relies on utilities.”

Steven Wills, Ameren Missouri’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, defended the rate hike, saying it’s necessary to maintain service and recover costs.
“We need to remain financially sound in order to make the investments that keep our system reliable,” Wills said.

While Ameren argues the hike ensures system reliability, consumer advocates like AARP, the Consumers Council, and the Missouri Industrial Energy Consumers warn that it may place an additional financial burden on households.
