Chandler Coon and his family are reeling after a break-in at their Independence home left them without more than $13,000 worth of valuables—and a deep sense of safety.
The burglary occurred Monday afternoon while the family was at work. When Chandler returned home, he discovered the front door ajar and quickly realized their home had been ransacked.
“Everything within range of the front door had all been taken—several pairs of shoes, two backpacks full of professional camera equipment,” Coon said. “Both my children’s rooms had been ransacked.”
The total loss, including stolen items and property damage, is estimated at around $15,000. While insurance is expected to cover structural repairs, the family’s biggest loss is irreplaceable—professional photography equipment vital to his wife’s career.
“Insurance requires receipts for everything stolen,” Coon explained. “We have a receipt for a brand-new pair of shoes, but most of the items are hard to track down. Unfortunately, we’re going to be at a loss for about 80%.”
The burglary has upended their lives. The family is now sleeping in the living room, unsure if it’s safe to return to their bedrooms. Beyond the financial hit, the emotional toll has been overwhelming.
“We can’t afford to recoup this, and that’s my wife’s livelihood—how she provides for our kids,” Coon said. “We just want our stuff back.”
Police have confirmed the investigation is now inactive due to a lack of leads or suspects, leaving the family with little hope for recovery. Still, they remain optimistic that someone might come forward with information.
