KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Nearly a foot of relentless rain has led to widespread flooding and power outages across Kansas City, Kansas — and some residents may be without electricity for days, officials say.
The torrential downpour began around 7 p.m. Wednesday and continued for over 12 hours, overwhelming infrastructure and leaving behind significant damage.
According to the Board of Public Utilities (BPU), the storms took out power lines, poles, and other key components. While repair crews are working nonstop, the utility warns that full restoration could take several days for some areas.
Streets Flooded, Mudslides and Sinkholes Reported
Public works crews responded Thursday to dozens of downed trees, flood-damaged streets, and other hazards. One mudslide left feet of mud covering Gibbs Road, and a sinkhole opened in another part of the city. Several streets have been reported as washed out by the heavy rainfall.
“This storm brought an extraordinary amount of rain in a very short time,” said Troy Shaw, Director of Public Works. “Some neighborhoods saw flooding levels we haven’t experienced since 1993. We appreciate residents’ patience as teams continue clearing streets and assessing the damage.”
Despite the deluge, officials confirmed that all pumping stations along the river remained operational throughout the storm.
Worst Damage Concentrated in Southern KCK
City officials urged residents to avoid the south side, particularly around Inland Drive north of Holiday Drive, which was hit hardest.
Residents are asked to report tree limbs or debris blocking roadways by calling 311.
Parks and Lakes Closed Amid Damage
Flooding forced the closure of Pierson Park Thursday afternoon, and there are concerns about potential damage at Wyandotte County Lake. Visitors are urged to use caution at the lake’s main entrance.
Cleanup efforts are expected to continue through the remainder of the week, as city and utility crews work to clear debris and restore services.
