Arizona Man Gets 6 Years for Human Smuggling and Fentanyl Trafficking

PHOENIX — A Tucson man has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for his role in both human smuggling and drug trafficking operations, federal officials announced.

Jon Christian Schacht, 37, pleaded guilty to possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute and conspiring to transport undocumented migrants for profit, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

Schacht received two concurrent sentences of 72 months and 24 months behind bars.

Prosecutors say Schacht ran a smuggling organization in southern Arizona that focused on bringing undocumented migrants into the U.S. He not only managed operations but also personally transported individuals and coordinated efforts to move them deeper into the country.

While running the smuggling ring, Schacht was also caught trafficking drugs. Authorities say he moved 42 kilograms of fentanyl from Tucson to Phoenix as part of a separate drug conspiracy.
