Governor Jared Polis is asking Coloradans to weigh in on a proposed pedestrian bridge connecting the Colorado State Capitol to Veterans Park across Lincoln Street. The estimated $18 million project would receive $8 million in state funding, with Polis pledging to raise the remaining $10 million through other means.
To gather public input, the governor launched a statewide survey at co150walkway.com, inviting residents to share their thoughts.
“Now is the time where we have to figure out—is this going to happen or not?” Polis told CBS News Colorado. “Do they want to see a celebration with a 150 walkway? Do they want small projects in other parts of the state? Or do they want nothing at all?”
The proposal has sparked debate online and within government circles. While the Capitol Building Advisory Committee advanced the project to the Capitol Development Committee in an 8-4 vote, critics have voiced strong opinions. One Instagram user likened the project to “putting a bumper sticker on a Ferrari.”
Polis acknowledged the mixed reactions, saying, “One thing I was excited about is, there was so much passion… I mean, people say ‘I love it. I hate it!’ But how do you measure that right?”
The four-question survey asks:
-
Do you want the walkway?
-
If not, would you prefer a different large project, several smaller projects, or no project at all?
-
If yes, do you want the current design or a scaled-back version?
-
Are you more excited to celebrate Colorado’s 150th anniversary or the United States’ 250th birthday?
Polis emphasized that the project is meant to reflect the state’s milestone—not his personal legacy. “I happen to be in the seat during our special birthday,” he said. “And yes, President Trump gets to be the guy in the White House who orchestrates our 250th, so whether you like me or whether you like President Trump, that’s irrelevant. It’s about our birthday and we want to make sure we observe that appropriately.”
