Colorado sues Trump administration over $80 million school funding freeze

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is taking legal action against the Trump administration for withholding $80 million in federal funds from the state’s school districts.

Weiser explained that many districts had already finalized their budgets, hired staff, and set up programs for students with special learning needs when the funding was suddenly frozen.

“In Pueblo, one regional migrant office has already communicated that it will be closing as of August 1 due to lack of funding. The abrupt freeze is also wreaking havoc on key teacher training programs as well as programs that make school more accessible to children with special learning needs, such as English learners,” said a statement from Weiser’s office.

He said the Department of Education informed school districts about the funding freeze on June 30.

“We’ll stand for what’s right and we will have the backs of parents, of teachers, of kids who need this money, who don’t want to see these harms happen. I don’t want Colorado educational leaders scrambling the way it’s happening right now. We can’t get this relief soon enough,” Weiser added.

In the lawsuit, joined by several other attorneys general, Weiser argues that the funding freeze violates multiple federal laws.
