Vice President JD Vance’s family vacation to Disneyland sparked public outrage this weekend, with hundreds turning out to protest while immigration raids surged across Southern California.
“No family vacation while we deal with family separation,” read one protester’s sign, bearing an image of Vance. Demonstrators gathered near the Grand Californian Hotel in Anaheim, where the vice president and his family were staying, waving flags and chanting their disapproval.
“I would tell [Vance] to go home,” one protester told Fox 11. “Get the hell out of here. We don’t want him here.”
Despite the backlash, Vance, his wife Usha, and their two children were seen walking through Disneyland the next day, escorted by casually dressed Secret Service agents. Their visit caused disruptions in the park, with some rides shut down and wait times extended due to heightened security. Visitors voiced frustration over the inconvenience.
The family was spotted near Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the recently reimagined ride that replaced Splash Mountain. The attraction has been at the center of cultural debate, as it moves away from the controversial “Song of the South” theme. While some praise the update as a progressive step, others view it as political overreach.
Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento said local officials were informed of Vance’s visit on Thursday. He acknowledged the timing was sensitive, especially as trust in government remains shaky in communities affected by immigration enforcement.
Sarmiento’s district, which includes cities like Santa Ana, Garden Grove, and parts of Anaheim, has seen an uptick in ICE activity since June. Advocates claim these raids have led to increased racial profiling and fear in Latino neighborhoods.
“I welcome any policymaker to visit, listen, and witness the hard-working immigrant communities that make our county strong,” Sarmiento said. “I respect the office, but I can’t respect policies that hurt our people.”
