A 35-year-old woman is facing a first-degree murder charge after investigators say she supplied the drugs that led to her cellmate’s death in March at the Oklahoma County Detention Center.
According to officials, the suspect was in custody at the time of Michelle Young’s death on March 17—just one day before Young’s birthday. A news release from the detention center states that the suspect provided the contraband believed to have caused the fatal overdose.
“This arrest serves as a reminder of the grave risk illicit drugs present within our facility,” said Paul Timmons, interim CEO of the Oklahoma County Detention Center.
The suspect was released from the jail on March 16. Investigators believe she had methamphetamine and fentanyl in her possession while inside the facility and shared a cell with Young until her release later that night. Young remained in the cell and was found unresponsive at 3:50 a.m. the next morning. She was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour later.
On July 10, the suspect was returned to the jail by a bondsman. According to an affidavit by investigator Gaven Fields, she was stopped at the body scanner, which detected foreign objects inside her body. Fields recognized her name and recalled that several inmates had previously alleged she provided fentanyl to Young before her death.
During an interview, the suspect allegedly admitted to giving Young the narcotics, according to the affidavit.
