Drone Technology Could Boost School Safety in Colorado

New drone technology may soon play a role in keeping Colorado schools safer and responding faster to active shooter situations.

The company Campus Guardian Angel showcased its advanced drone system Thursday at Regis Jesuit High School, demonstrating how the technology can assist law enforcement in identifying and confronting threats more quickly.

David Card, president of Regis Jesuit High School, joined others in learning how the drones could help protect students and staff. These drones can reach a scene rapidly, break through windows, and even fire projectiles at suspects if necessary.

“It’s amazing how quickly those drones move through the building. That’s one of the challenges when you have something happening — locating it quickly,” Card said.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, Colorado has experienced three mass shootings this year, resulting in 13 injuries and one death. One of those occurred near Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs last May. Since 2014, the state has seen 108 school-related incidents.
