Wildfires Trigger Evacuations, Force Closure of Black Canyon National Park in Colorado

Two wildfires sparked by lightning have forced the evacuation and full closure of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado. Park officials confirmed Thursday afternoon that fires are burning on both the north and south rims of the canyon.

The park is now closed to all incoming visitors, and authorities are urging the public to stay away until further notice.

The area has been under a Red Flag Warning since noon Thursday, due to a combination of strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation, all of which heighten fire danger.

While official acreage hasn’t been released for both fires, meteorologist Kody Wilson reported the south rim blaze is approximately 425 acres as of 3:43 p.m.

This remains a breaking story, with updates expected as crews assess the situation and continue firefighting efforts.
