Charlie Kirk Blames Texas Flood Death Toll on DEI Initiatives

Right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk is under fire after claiming that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies contributed to the rising death toll in Texas following catastrophic floods.

Speaking on his show on Real America’s Voice, the Turning Point USA founder said, “The Democrats are so despicable. The Democrats are not lifting a finger to remember the well over 100 that have died in Texas Hill Country.” He continued, “The death toll likely would not have been as high if it wasn’t for DEI.”

Kirk argued the tragedy highlights what he believes is the consequence of prioritizing diversity over merit. “It’s not just incompetence. This is DEI working to undermine meritocratic institutions, and more people likely died than otherwise would have because of DEI,” he said.

The statement echoes a growing narrative among conservatives blaming DEI policies for institutional failures. Former President Donald Trump has ordered federal employees working on DEI programs to be placed on leave. He previously blamed a deadly mid-air collision over Washington D.C. on what he called a “diversity push” at the Federal Aviation Administration. Elon Musk similarly tweeted that “DEI means people die” following wildfires in California.

The comments come amid growing scrutiny of the flood response in Kerr County, Texas, where at least 119 people have died and more than 170 remain missing. Officials have faced tough questions about the lack of early warning systems and preparedness as flash floods tore through cabins and trailer parks along the Guadalupe River during the July 4 holiday.

Kerrville police officer Jonathan Lamb described harrowing rescue efforts. “They rescued people out of vehicles. They rescued people out of homes that were already flooded, pulling them out of windows,” he said.

Sheriff Larry Leitha promised a full review. “If improvements need to be made, improvements will be made,” he said.

As the search continues and communities mourn, Kirk’s controversial remarks have added fuel to an already heated national debate over the role of DEI in public institutions.
