DNA from Suspect’s Sandal Leads to Arrest in 2022 Kansas City Homicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man has been charged in connection with a 2022 homicide in Kansas City after detectives matched DNA from a sandal found at the scene.

On the night of Jan. 26, 2022, first responders were called to E. 10th Street and Olive Street for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, a woman standing outside a Kia Optima directed them to the body of 25-year-old Austin Michael Knowles-DeClements, who was found dead inside the car.

The woman told police she was in the vehicle while Knowles-DeClements attempted to sell marijuana.

At the scene, detectives collected several pieces of evidence, including spent shell casings, the victim’s cellphone, and a single black-and-white Nike sandal.

Investigators accessed the victim’s phone and discovered a contact number that was linked to Maurice Green. They later obtained a DNA sample from the sandal, which matched Green, who is now 21 years old.

In a February 2023 interview, Green denied involvement in the homicide but admitted he was present at the scene and confirmed the sandal was his.

On Tuesday, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Green with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. He is currently held without bond at the Jackson County Detention Center and was scheduled to appear before a judge on Wednesday afternoon.
