San Bernardino, California — Two women and their four dogs were rescued from a rapidly rising river in Southern California after powerful floodwaters surrounded their encampment and cut off their route to safety.
The dramatic rescue unfolded Sunday along the Santa Ana River near E Street in San Bernardino, where the group became stranded as rushing water transformed the area around them into a small island.
San Bernardino County firefighters responded at approximately 11:58 a.m. after receiving reports of the stranded women and their animals. Swiftwater rescue crews navigated the dangerous current to bring everyone safely back to shore.
Dramatic Rescue Unfolds Along the Santa Ana River
Video released by San Bernardino County Fire shows rescue personnel maneuvering a small inflatable boat through the churning water toward the stranded group.
As floodwaters continued rushing around the makeshift island, firefighters carefully helped the two women into the vessel and fitted them with life jackets before beginning the trip back to dry land.
The operation required rescuers to navigate the fast-moving current while ensuring that both the women and their pets remained secure throughout the journey.
The four dogs needed additional precautions during the crossing. Firefighters placed the small animals inside a mesh bag to keep them together and prevent them from moving around in the boat as rescuers made their way toward the riverbank.
“The small dogs were a bit too excited for the adventure, so they were secured in a mesh bag for their trip to the shore,” the fire department said in a Facebook post accompanying the footage.
The video shows firefighters paddling the women and their four-legged companions toward safety, bringing the tense rescue to a successful conclusion.
All Six Rescued Without Injuries
Despite the hazardous conditions, the operation ended without reported injuries.
“All were safely returned, and no injuries were reported,” officials said.
The successful rescue highlighted the challenges emergency crews face when floodwaters rise quickly and leave people with few safe options for reaching dry ground.
Fast-moving rivers can become dangerous even when water levels initially appear manageable. Rising currents may cover familiar paths, surround low-lying areas and make it difficult for stranded people to escape without assistance.
In this case, firefighters used a boat-based rescue to reach the women and transport them and their dogs away from the isolated area.
Monster Storm Brings Destructive Conditions Across Southern California
The river rescue occurred as Tropical Storm Rachel brought destructive weather to parts of Southern California, according to the supplied report.
The storm’s impacts extended beyond swollen waterways, with coastal communities also facing powerful waves and strong winds.
In Long Beach, sections of a century-old waterfront boardwalk reportedly sustained serious damage as large waves tore through wooden planks and seawater battered the structure.
Footage captured waves striking the waterfront as officials worked to protect vulnerable sections of the historic walkway ahead of Saturday night’s high tide.
By Saturday evening, the damaged boardwalk had been closed to the public, with authorities posting “No trespassing” signs to keep people away from the potentially dangerous area.
Damaged Homes Add to Storm Concerns
Other locations also experienced significant damage as the storm moved through the region.
The report said eight homes were deemed unsafe following the severe weather. One waterfront property suffered alarming structural damage, with video showing a large crack extending from the foundation toward the roof.
The reported damage illustrated the range of hazards associated with powerful coastal storms, including destructive waves, compromised structures and rapidly changing water conditions.
For residents near rivers and waterways, flooding can pose a separate but equally serious threat, particularly when rising water isolates people before they have time to move to safer ground.
Why Rapidly Rising Rivers Can Become Dangerous
Floodwaters can rise quickly after heavy rainfall, increasing the speed and depth of a river’s current. Water that appears shallow may still be powerful enough to knock someone off their feet, while submerged obstacles can make escape attempts even more dangerous.
People near swollen rivers should avoid crossing flooded paths or attempting to drive or walk through moving water. Anyone who becomes trapped should contact emergency services and follow instructions from trained rescuers.
The San Bernardino incident ended safely, with both women and all four dogs brought back to dry land.
