Former MSNBC host Joy Reid has sparked controversy by suggesting the 2026 U.S. elections might not be free and fair, claiming it’s “insane” to assume they will be. Reid made the comments during an interview on Wajahat Ali’s Substack podcast, The Left Hook.
“I think it’s insane, honestly, to just assume we’re going to have normal elections next year,” Reid said, expressing fears that President Donald Trump and his allies may undermine democratic processes.
Reid questioned the motives behind Republican support for Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill”, saying many GOP members appeared unconcerned about re-election, which she sees as a red flag.
“The fact that Republicans are still voting for the bill tells me they’re not actually worried about being reelected,” she argued. “Trump’s not acting like someone afraid of losing power.”
She went on to accuse Trump of behaving like an autocrat, saying he no longer relies on voter support.
“I don’t think Trump intends to leave office,” Reid claimed. “He intends to stay in office like Putin until he dies.”
Reid warned that removing Trump from power would require “an extraordinary movement.”
Her remarks have drawn sharp criticism from conservatives, with some calling her claims “baseless” and part of a fear-driven narrative. Others view her warnings as a response to growing concerns over democratic norms and the centralization of power.
The comments have added fuel to an already tense political atmosphere ahead of the 2026 midterms.
