KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is looking into the death of an inmate at the Wyandotte County Detention Center, after he was found unresponsive in his cell late Saturday night, July 6.
According to the KBI, 50-year-old Charles L. Adair was discovered unresponsive just after 8:30 p.m. by medical staff. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Adair was pronounced dead shortly before 9:20 p.m.
Preliminary findings reveal that Adair had been treated for a pre-existing leg wound shortly before the incident. After his medical treatment, he allegedly became combative—yelling, resisting commands, and physically opposing deputies’ efforts to return him to his cell.
Deputies managed to restrain Adair with handcuffs and placed him on the bottom bunk. While removing the restraints, he continued resisting, according to the KBI. Once the cuffs were removed and deputies left the cell, medical staff returned shortly after and found him unresponsive.
Investigators said there were no immediate signs of physical trauma linked to the incident. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
Adair had been in custody for less than 24 hours, having been arrested on Friday, July 4, on misdemeanor warrants related to multiple traffic violations.
The KBI emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing.
