Much to my anticipation, the season premiere of American Horror Story: Freak Show came complete with gory surprises and crazy twists and turns. The show focuses on a failing circus in Jupiter, Florida in the 1950’s run by a German woman named Elsa Mars. The show features real life “freaks,” as they call themselves, including Rose Siggins, a woman born with no legs, and Jyoti Amge, who is the smallest girl in the world. Compared to the other seasons of American Horror Story, Freakshow is by far the scariest and just gives off an overall creepy vibe that makes you scared watching it alone in the dark.

In an Entertainment Weekly article, Ryan Murphy, the producer of the series, said that this season of American Horror Story is supposed to be the scariest and the most challenging one yet, and based on the season premiere, I can already tell that I’ll have troubles sleeping every Wednesday night after each new episode. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show set a record for the network as the most watched TV show reeling in ten million total views.

The shows scare factor is heightened by its use of horrifyingly gruesome makeup and costumes. The music also plays a huge role in the eeriness of the show. The creepy music that plays during credits and throughout many scenes in the show sends tingles down your back from just hearing it. The most terrifying part of the show in my opinion would have to be Twisty the Clown. His murderous rampage and alarming appearance is sure to scare any viewer.

Some highlights from the first episode include an introduction of the whole cast and characters including the mysterious twins who share a body, and of course, Twisty the clown.

Luckily, almost all the big stars from the past seasons have returned including Jessica Lange who plays Elsa Mars, Sarah Paulson who plays Bette and Dot Tattler, the twins who share one body, and Even Peters who plays Jimmy Darling, the boy with lobster hand. Other returning actors in this season include Kathy Bates who plays Ethel Darling, Jimmy’s mother and also the bearded lady; Angela Bassett who plays Desiree Dupree, the three breasted lady; and of course, Emma Roberts who plays Maggie Esmerelda, whose role in the show is yet to be revealed. Overall, the season premiere of American Horror Story: Freakshow was very entertaining and ultimately exceeded many expectations.
