Oklahoma Teen Arrested Following Incident at Lawton’s Freedom Festival

LAWTON, Okla. – A 19-year-old has been arrested and charged following a disturbance at Lawton’s Freedom Festival on Saturday, June 28.

Kendrell Depaul Averett faces multiple charges, including:

  • Possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction

  • Possession of stolen property

  • Driving under the influence (under 21)

According to a statement from Lawton Police, officers were called to a disturbance involving several juveniles at Elmer Thomas Park during the festival. While on scene, officers and bystanders reportedly heard what sounded like fireworks or gunshots coming from a nearby south parking lot.

Witnesses described seeing a male—later identified as Averett—running with a handgun and tucking it into his waistband. Officers later located and arrested Averett without incident, recovering a stolen handgun in the process.

Averett was booked into the Comanche County Jail and has since been released on $26,000 bond.
