COLORADO SPRINGS — Two 18-year-olds and a 15-year-old are in custody after allegedly stealing $7,000 worth of jewelry during a string of burglaries across the Front Range.
Just after 1 a.m. on Friday, July 4, the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Motor Vehicle Theft Unit received a report of a stolen gray 2013 Dodge Charger moving through the city. Detectives from the Burglary and Theft units tracked the vehicle near Woodmen Road and North Academy Boulevard.
While monitoring the car, officers watched as three suspects broke into Jared Jewelers. Due to the stolen vehicle’s criminal history, the Tactical Enforcement Unit was called in and managed to block the car against the building.
The suspects fled on foot but were quickly caught after a brief chase.
Investigators later discovered that the trio had unlawfully entered multiple other jewelry stores in the area. Jewelry valued at $7,000 was recovered from the stolen vehicle, and CSPD is working with other agencies to connect additional cases.
The suspects were identified as 18-year-olds Jayden Miller and Jesus Esparza, both charged with Motor Vehicle Theft, Burglary, and Obstruction.
The 15-year-old suspect was wanted on an outstanding warrant for one count of Murder – Extreme Indifference and eight counts of Attempted Murder – Extreme Indifference. He now also faces charges of Motor Vehicle Theft, Burglary, and Obstruction.
All three teens were booked into detention facilities, and the investigation remains ongoing.
