Cherry Creek Reservoir in Aurora is always a popular destination on sunny summer days, but it’s expected to be especially packed this Fourth of July weekend.
Victoria Lujan and her family are regular visitors to the reservoir. “Usually, we try to come a couple times a summer, as much as we can,” Lujan told CBS Colorado.
The family enjoys Jet Skiing, but they take safety seriously — especially because of her dad’s strict rules. “Everyone has to have a life vest at all times. We always have to have at least two people on the Jet Ski. Your head is always on the swivel,” Lujan said.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is urging everyone to follow those same safety practices during what they say is the busiest weekend of the year. CPW recommends always wearing a life jacket, watching the weather, swimming safely, and staying alert for other boats and recreators.
“If you’re out on the water, just be courteous and mindful that you’re not getting too close to them,” said Bridget O’Rourke, CPW’s statewide public information officer. “Or hitting their boat in any way, or also drinking and boating, because we have seen accidents happen when people are under the influence on the boat.”
Lujan agreed, saying drinking while boating is a real issue. “Even though you’re not supposed to, people are drinking. People are drinking and driving these vehicles.”
O’Rourke stressed that boating under the influence is not only dangerous but also illegal. “You can get arrested and go to jail,” she said.
If you’re heading to Cherry Creek Reservoir on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, CPW advises arriving early and coming prepared for the day — once the park hits capacity, reentry is not guaranteed if you leave.
Lujan’s family won’t be visiting during the holiday weekend, but she had a simple message for anyone planning to go: “Just make sure you’re very alert.”
