Tensions Rise as Protesters Stage Sit-In at Rep. Jeff Hurd’s Office in Grand Junction

Residents of Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District gathered Wednesday for a sit-in at Representative Jeff Hurd’s Grand Junction office, protesting his support for President Donald Trump’s sweeping domestic legislation, known as the Big Beautiful Bill.

The demonstration, organized by groups including Grand Junction Indivisible, Montrose and Ouray Counties Indivisible, and Mountain Action Indivisible, aimed to pressure Hurd to vote against the bill, which critics say includes deep cuts to essential programs like SNAP and Medicaid.

Tensions flared when building security attempted to remove protesters, with one officer allegedly trying to grab a protester’s phone. Police were called to the scene but confirmed that the protesters were legally allowed to remain, prompting security to back off.

Mallory Martin of Indivisible Grand Junction said the protest is expected to continue through Friday.

“Republicans in Congress are selling us out to help billionaires like Elon Musk get even richer,” Martin said. “Their tax-scam budget bill includes trillions of dollars in cuts to SNAP, Medicaid, and other essential programs in order to fund more than $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to the ultra-rich and big corporations. We’re showing up in person at Rep. Hurd’s office to urge him to do the right thing and vote NO on this shameful and destructive bill.”

The bill narrowly cleared the Senate on Tuesday, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. In response, Colorado lawmakers expressed strong opposition. Senator John Hickenlooper called the legislation “pure lunacy and downright cruel.”

Hurd’s office has yet to comment on the protest.
