(COLORADO SPRINGS) — With the Fourth of July approaching, firefighters are urging the public to stay alert about fire dangers.
Though the holiday is a time for celebration, it’s also one of the riskiest periods for fire-related incidents. Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) Deputy Fire Marshal Kevin Bird shared insights on fire hazards, safety tips, and where to enjoy fireworks legally.
“We face an added risk we don’t usually deal with the rest of the year, mainly from fireworks the community tends to use,” Bird said.
Despite the current green landscape, Bird warned that it doesn’t eliminate the fire threat. Dry vegetation and other factors can still trigger a blaze.
Bird reminded residents that it’s illegal to buy, sell, possess, or use fireworks in Colorado Springs. This includes anything requiring a flame, like sparklers and smoke bombs. However, small novelty items like poppers and snappers that burst when thrown are permitted.
“If anyone has fireworks they don’t plan to use, we encourage them to drop them off at any fire station,” Bird added. “Our fire investigators will pick them up and safely dispose of them with help from the regional bomb unit.”
He also encouraged families to enjoy one of the many public events planned across Colorado Springs on Thursday, July 4.
This year, nine locations around Olympic City will host fireworks displays. For those hoping to celebrate elsewhere, several Southern Colorado cities are also offering shows.
