Colorado prosecutors have upgraded charges against the suspect in the Boulder terror attack following the death of 82-year-old Karen Diamond, who was critically injured in the June 1 assault involving Molotov cocktails.
Karen Diamond, one of the eight people injured in the attack, succumbed to her injuries, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Monday. “This loss is deeply felt by the Boulder community and our entire state, particularly within our strong Jewish community,” said Colorado Gov. Jared Polis. “Karen was taken from us too soon, and we mourn her loss while remembering her life and the impact she had on those who loved her.”
The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national, was indicted last week on 12 federal hate crime charges. Prosecutors say he targeted a weekly demonstration on Pearl Street Mall calling for the release of Israeli hostages, throwing Molotov cocktails and shouting “Free Palestine.” Investigators report Soliman intended to kill as many as 20 people and had attempted to purchase a gun but was unable to due to his immigration status.
Soliman, who has pleaded not guilty, is also facing numerous charges in state court. Following Diamond’s death, prosecutors added two counts of first-degree murder and 66 additional charges as more victims were identified through the ongoing investigation.
The amended complaint now includes:
-
2 counts of first-degree murder
-
52 counts of attempted first-degree murder
-
8 counts of first-degree assault
-
18 counts of attempted first-degree assault
-
2 counts of third-degree assault
-
2 counts of using an incendiary device
-
16 counts of attempted use of an incendiary device
-
1 count of animal cruelty
The total number of victims named in the complaint has risen to 29, with 13 suffering physical injuries.
“These charges reflect the gravity of this horrific attack,” said Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty. “Our hearts are with the Diamond family during this incredibly difficult time.”
He added, “Our office will fight for justice for the victims, their loved ones, and the community. I know the people of Colorado will continue to unite in supporting all those affected.”
