Barry Morphew Extradited to Colorado in Wife’s Murder Case

Barry Morphew, the Colorado man accused of killing his wife, Suzanne Morphew, has been extradited from Maricopa County, Arizona, and is now in custody at the Alamosa County Jail, according to the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Morphew is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Earlier this month, prosecutors refiled first-degree murder charges against him. Morphew had faced similar charges years ago, but they were dropped in 2022 after what many described as a mishandled investigation. The case was previously led by Linda Stanley, a prosecutor who was later disbarred amid accusations of misconduct, including withholding evidence from the defense.

Suzanne Morphew was reported missing on May 10, 2020, after going for a bike ride in Chaffee County and never returning. Her bike and helmet were found along the roadside that same day. Her remains were discovered in 2023.

The case was always eligible to be reopened if new evidence emerged. According to Morphew’s recent indictment, Suzanne died of “homicide by unspecified means” in the context of BAM intoxication—a combination of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine, drugs often used to sedate animals.

Investigators said they found a locked gun safe in the Morphew home containing a tranquilizer rifle and packages of darts. A needle cap from one of those darts was also discovered in the family’s dryer.
