CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. — A 35-year-old Venezuelan citizen, Darwin Arriche-Sierra, was arrested Tuesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a failed attempt to seek sanctuary at a county probation office.
Incident Details
-
Target: Darwin Arriche-Sierra, 35 (Venezuelan citizen)
-
Criminal Record: Two DUI convictions
-
Driver: Carolina Suarez-Estrada, 32 (Colombian citizen, also in the U.S. illegally)
-
Location: Chaffee County, Colorado
ICE agents were tracking Arriche-Sierra during a routine traffic stop when Suarez-Estrada, who was driving the vehicle, refused to pull over and instead drove to a county probation office, apparently attempting to claim sanctuary.
ICE Response & Arrests
According to ICE, officers arrested Suarez-Estrada at the probation office and served her with a custody redetermination. Both Arriche-Sierra and Suarez-Estrada remain in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings.
Sanctuary Jurisdictions & Federal Pressure
In May, the Trump administration identified Chaffee County as one of several sanctuary jurisdictions, accusing local authorities of failing to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has issued a one-week deadline for these jurisdictions to comply with federal immigration laws or face Department of Justice action.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, full cooperation by state and local governments in immigration enforcement efforts is a top priority,” Bondi stated.
Ongoing Manhunt
Authorities also confirmed an active manhunt in Colorado for two criminal migrants involved in what officials describe as “violent actions.”
