‘It’s Very Unnerving’: Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves Colorado Springs Residents Seeking Answers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to an officer-involved shooting Friday afternoon in the 1100 block of Branding Iron Circle, near Galley Road and Powers Boulevard.

According to CSPD, their Violent Offender Task Force was in the area searching for a wanted suspect shortly before 3 p.m. Officers located the suspect inside a vehicle, identified themselves as police, and ordered the person to exit.

“The suspect then shot at least one round at officers,” said CSPD’s Caitlin Ford. “At that time, at least one officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect.”

Nearby residents reported hearing gunfire.

“I just heard one pop and knew it was a gunshot, not a firework, and got my dogs and me to the back and stayed safe,” said one neighbor, who requested anonymity.

Another resident, also wishing to remain anonymous, said she witnessed the aftermath from her window.

“That’s when we went to a different part of the house and saw that they were performing CPR on the suspect,” she said.

Despite CPR efforts, police confirmed the suspect died at the scene. No officers were injured.

The incident left some neighbors shaken, especially since the area is typically quiet.

“It’s very unnerving, especially since this is an overall quiet area,” one neighbor said.

Others noted that they had seen police investigating a nearby house months earlier and wondered if that was related to Friday’s deadly shooting.

“A couple months ago, they were just kind of scoping out the house,” a resident recalled. “Nothing really came of it.”

Police have not confirmed whether the previous activity is connected to the incident. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

“That is part of the ongoing investigation right now, and one of the things EPSO will be working to determine,” a CSPD spokesperson said.

The names of the suspect and the officers involved will be released later.

This marks the eighth officer-involved shooting in Colorado Springs this year, five of which have been fatal.
