FLORENCE, Ariz. — A man accused of killing a woman in Pinal County in 2022 has been indicted on first-degree murder charges after being located in Colorado earlier this month, authorities said.
According to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office, 35-year-old Ismael Ortega Hernandez was indicted in connection with the shooting death of Julieta Marin Amador, who was identified as either his girlfriend or wife.
Details of the 2022 Shooting
Investigators said the incident happened on Nov. 22, 2022, at a home near Stanfield. Prosecutors allege Hernandez shot Amador twice in front of her two children and underage sister. Authorities revealed Hernandez had a prior domestic violence record and was in the U.S. illegally.
Arrest in Colorado
Earlier this month, Hernandez was arrested in Colorado on suspicion of driving under the influence and providing a false name to officers. He was detained until federal immigration agents transferred him to an ICE facility in Florence, where Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) detectives took him into custody to prevent deportation and ensure prosecution.
Officials React
Pinal County Attorney Brad Miller praised the multi-agency effort that led to Hernandez’s capture:
“This was an extremely complex case involving multiple agencies across state lines and coordination with federal authorities,” Miller said. “Thanks to their persistence and dedication, we are one step closer to achieving justice for the victim, her children, and our community.”
Hernandez remains in custody as prosecutors move forward with the case.
