COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A suspect wanted for attempted murder in La Junta was arrested Thursday night in Colorado Springs, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Police said 40-year-old Chezaray Chavez had an active arrest warrant for attempted homicide out of La Junta. On August 10, the La Junta Police Department reported that a victim was shot on Carson Avenue just before midnight and taken to a metro area hospital. Investigators identified Chavez as the suspect in the case.
Around 3 p.m., Colorado Springs police tactical units assisted the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) in attempting to contact Chavez on Gentle Wind Road in east Colorado Springs. After positively identifying him, officers made announcements instructing Chavez to exit the home and surrender, but he barricaded himself inside and refused to comply.
At 4:22 p.m., a shelter-in-place order was issued for the area. CSPD said officers and USMS made several attempts to de-escalate the situation before deploying chemical irritants into the home to force Chavez out.
By 7:20 p.m., Chavez surrendered and was taken into custody. The shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly after. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder.
