Cause of Texas Crash That Killed 5 Revealed: Trucker Fell Asleep at the Wheel

A tragic multi-vehicle crash that claimed the lives of five people in Kaufman County, Texas, has been linked to a driver falling asleep at the wheel, authorities revealed.

The fatal incident occurred Saturday on Interstate 20, where traffic had already come to a stop due to a prior accident. According to officials, 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, the driver of an 18-wheeler, failed to stop and plowed into a pickup truck carrying five people, killing everyone inside.

The collision set off a chain reaction, involving seven vehicles in total — including three semi-trucks. One of the rigs jackknifed, striking three more vehicles.

Gonzalez-Companioni has since been arrested, and investigators say he admitted to falling asleep moments before the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together all the events that led to the horrific loss of life.
