Around 4:30 a.m. Friday, El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies found a 37-year-old man unresponsive in his bunk at the county jail.
Deputies and medical staff attempted lifesaving efforts. Within ten minutes, medical personnel from American Medical Response and the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived and continued treatment. The man was pronounced dead at 4:57 a.m.
Sheriff Joseph Roybal ordered a full investigation, which the EPSO Investigations Division will lead. Early findings show no signs of self-harm, assault, or foul play. The sheriff also requested an autopsy from the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
EPSO also addressed two other inmate deaths reported in the past 30 days: 33-year-old Amber Enlow and 47-year-old Paula Orth.
“Although we have not yet received final reports or conclusive information from the El Paso County Coroner’s Office regarding the cause of death for Ms. Orth and Ms. Enlow, our preliminary investigations have identified areas for further examination,” the statement read.
“Our office is conducting an extensive, multifaceted investigation, with assistance from the Coroner’s Office and other law enforcement agencies. We will continue updating the families of the deceased and the community as more information becomes available,” said Cassandra Sebastian, Public Information Officer for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
