The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) arrested two people on motor vehicle theft charges after locating a stolen truck and uncovering drugs during the investigation.
Around 8:30 p.m. on the 100 block of North Academy Boulevard, officers tracked a 1999 Ford F-250 that had evaded law enforcement several times in the past two weeks. Surveillance identified the suspects as 31-year-old Gabriel Bales and 41-year-old Carrie Schaefer, who were spotted spray-painting the truck and removing stickers to disguise it.
Officers arrested both suspects at the scene. CSPD said Bales, who was on parole for motor vehicle theft and wanted on a parole violation, also possessed meth and fentanyl. Investigators later linked him to additional stolen vehicle cases.
Both Bales and Schaefer face motor vehicle theft charges and were booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
