Colorado Now Requires Health Warning Labels on Gas Stoves

A new Colorado law that took effect August 1 requires gas stoves sold in the state to carry warning labels about potential health risks.

The measure, House Bill 25-1161, was passed in response to growing concerns about indoor air pollution from gas appliances. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) says gas stoves can release particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, benzene, formaldehyde, and methane—all of which can build up indoors without proper ventilation.

Health Risks Linked to Gas Stove Use

CDPHE notes that exposure can trigger headaches, nausea, throat and eye irritation, asthma flare-ups, and other respiratory problems. Long-term use is associated with chronic heart and lung disease, weakened immunity, and even some cancers.

New Labeling Requirement

Retailers can no longer sell or display new gas stoves in Colorado without a yellow adhesive label reading:
“Understand the air quality implications of having an indoor gas stove”
The label must also include a QR code or web link directing buyers to CDPHE’s information page. The same disclosure rules apply to online sales.

Safety Tips from CDPHE

To reduce risks, CDPHE advises:

  • Install and maintain stoves according to manufacturer instructions.

  • Always use the stove hood and replace filters as directed.

  • Choose hoods that vent outdoors.

  • Never use a gas stove to heat your home.

  • Consider pilotless ignition models.

  • Use portable air cleaners or upgraded HVAC filters.

  • Increase ventilation by opening windows, using fans, or bringing in outdoor air.

Industry Pushback

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers has filed for a temporary restraining order against Colorado, arguing there’s no proven direct link between gas stove use and adverse health effects.
