A grieving son is searching for answers after his mother, Cheryl Bennett, was found dead in Colorado Springs on Aug. 1.
“She had an energy about her that gravitated a lot of people… and if you knew my mama, you knew that she was a loving person,” said her son, Michael Mcnish, who lives out of state.
According to Colorado Springs Police (CSPD), Bennett was reported missing on July 28 from the 4400 block of Champions View, near Austin Bluffs Parkway and Dublin Boulevard. Her body was discovered about a mile and a half south, near Stetson Hills Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway, but police have not disclosed the exact location.
“This don’t make any sense to me, where she was found,” Mcnish said. “She didn’t just walk off and say, ‘forget everything.’ That’s not my mom… Something happened to her.”
The El Paso County Coroner’s Office took several days to confirm Bennett’s identity. The cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
Bennett worked at the Golden Nugget in Cripple Creek, according to her son and friends. Police are urging anyone with information—or security camera footage from late July—to call 719-444-7000.
“I just wish people would look at these old cameras… If I even get a small shot of her walking, that would answer so many questions,” Mcnish said. “But if nobody has any footage of her at all, then something ain’t right.”
