Prospect Sun Fresh Closes, Leaving Kansas City Neighborhood Without Grocery Store

The Sun Fresh grocery store at E. 31st Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, has abruptly closed its doors. A sign posted Tuesday morning informed customers that, “due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we are no longer, at this time, able to serve the residents of this community.”

The store, owned by the nonprofit Community Builders of Kansas City (CBKC) since 2022, opened in 2018 as part of a $15 million public-private revitalization effort for the Linwood Shopping Center. In a statement, CBKC confirmed that as of Aug. 12, 2025, the Midtown Sun Fresh location is no longer operating, declining to offer further details.

Security problems have troubled the store since its debut, prompting the city to invest in safety upgrades. Recently, customers complained about empty shelves and unpleasant odors inside.

Longtime shopper Jannine Owens expressed frustration, saying she hasn’t been able to get all the items she needs in recent weeks. “We need answers because at the end of the day, that don’t make sense,” Owens said.
