Northern Colorado Hit by Record-Breaking Storm, Flights Delayed and Canceled

Did you experience the wild thunderstorm that hit Northern Colorado this weekend? Sunday, August 10, brought quite a weather rollercoaster. The day began nicely, with a hint of fall easing in after the long stretch of heat.

But by late afternoon, everything shifted. I had just finished mowing the lawn when dark storm clouds started rolling in. Looking southwest, I saw a threatening sight.

I quickly moved things around in my garage to get my truck inside—because in Colorado, you never know when a storm might bring damaging hail, and it’s better to be safe than sorry. Just moments after pulling the truck in, heavy rain poured down.

Record Rainfall Breaks After Nearly 150 Years

As we say here in Colorado, “we needed the moisture.” And that’s exactly what we got—lots of it. So much, in fact, that a nearly 150-year-old daily rainfall record was broken yesterday.

Airport Chaos: Flights Delayed and Canceled

KDVR reports that flood advisories were issued across Weld and Larimer counties in Northern Colorado. The storm caused delays for over 1,000 flights and cancellations of around 70 flights at Denver International Airport.

Denver International Airport itself broke a 147-year-old daily rainfall record for the city. An incredible 1.43 inches of rain fell Sunday, nearly doubling the previous record set in 1878.

Typically, August brings about one and a half inches of rain for the whole month, but Denver International saw that entire amount in just a few hours.
