Fremont County man who helped brother escape prison gets deferred sentence

A Fremont County man accused of aiding his brother’s prison escape has been given a deferred sentence, according to court records.

On Monday, Kyle Vanvliet was sentenced to a two-year deferred sentence and two years of probation.

Investigators said that in June 2024, Kyle helped his brother, Kegan, escape from the Fremont County Detention Center by meeting him at a nearby gas station and giving him his car. In an interview, Kyle claimed he was not there to help his brother and that he regularly spent time at that gas station.

At the time, Kegan was facing attempted murder charges. Authorities said he led them on a manhunt that ended about 40 miles away in Colorado Springs.

Court records show that in March, Kegan was sentenced to six years in prison for his role in the escape.
