I-25 and Frontage Road Closures Announced for North Express Lanes Project

Commuters should prepare for major traffic changes as the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) moves forward with the I-25 North Express Lanes project.

From Monday, Aug. 11, at 7 a.m. through Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 5 a.m., the I-25 East Frontage Road will close between Weld County Roads (WCR) 34 and 32. CDOT will use this stretch for staging and preparing bridge girders.

For drivers who rely on the Frontage Road, CDOT has outlined detour routes:

  • Northbound traffic will turn east at WCR 32, head to Colorado Boulevard, travel north to WCR 34, and then return west to the Frontage Road.

  • Southbound traffic will take the reverse route, turning east at WCR 34, south on Colorado Boulevard, and west on WCR 32 to reconnect with the Frontage Road.

Overnight closures on I-25 at WCR 38 are also scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 18–19, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. During this time:

  • Southbound I-25 traffic will detour via Colorado Highway 402, US Highway 287, and Colorado Highway 66 before rejoining I-25.

  • Northbound I-25 drivers will use temporary ramps to the I-25 East Frontage Road, which will be closed south of WCR 38.

CDOT says these closures will protect both drivers and construction crews, while also ensuring the bridge replacement is completed quickly. The existing WCR 38 bridge, built in 1960, will be replaced to accommodate the widened I-25. The new structure will feature an 8-foot-wide sidewalk for improved multimodal access, in line with the Town of Mead’s transportation plans.

While CDOT recognizes the six-month bridge closure will be inconvenient, the agency emphasizes that it will speed up the project, strengthen long-term infrastructure, and ultimately save taxpayers money.
