Colorado Still High Risk, But Auto Theft Is Trending Down

Colorado Drops from Nation’s Highest Auto Theft State

For years, Colorado held the unfortunate title of leading the nation in auto thefts. The problem became so bad that many people avoided trips to Denver altogether, fearing their vehicles could be stolen — and with good reason. The old saying “better safe than sorry” was a common refrain.

Now, there’s a bit of good news for 2025. While Colorado still ranks among the top 10 states for vehicle theft, it no longer sits at number one.

2024 Sees Major Decline in Car Thefts

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, more than 850,000 vehicles were stolen in the United States in 2024 — roughly one every 37 seconds. Colorado dropped to seventh place in the national rankings last year. California now holds the top spot, followed by Texas at number two.

How to Protect Your Vehicle from Theft

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association recommends simple but effective precautions to reduce your risk:

  • Take your keys with you when you leave your vehicle

  • Close and lock all windows and doors when parked

  • Park in well-lit areas whenever possible

  • Avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle, especially where they can be seen
