EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — Ten newly certified wildland firefighters are ready to join the fight against wildfires after graduating this week from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Academy with their Firefighter II Certification.
The academy provided more than 65 hours of classroom and field training per cadet, totaling over 650 hours of instruction. Training covered essential wildfire prevention, mitigation, and response techniques.
“I am excited to welcome these highly trained individuals to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Unit and the broader wildland fire community,” said Sheriff and Fire Warden Joseph Roybal. He emphasized that education and mitigation are key to preventing wildfires, citing the lasting devastation from the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest Fires.
With certification in hand, the graduates will now join the front lines of wildfire preparedness and response during the peak of fire season.
