CSP: Child Rescued After Alleged DUI Driver Fled Troopers

A Colorado State Patrol chase ended with the arrest of an alleged drunk driver and the rescue of a screaming child from the suspect’s car, the agency said Thursday.

Incident Began with a 911 Tip

On July 29, a motorist driving along Interstate 70 near Deer Trail reported a green Volvo station wagon with no license plates, a gas pump nozzle dangling from the tank, and a child inside yelling for help. The tipster called *CSP (*277), the hotline for reporting impaired or aggressive drivers.

30-Mile Pursuit Ends Near Watkins

State troopers spotted the vehicle, but the driver fled. The chase continued for about 30 miles before troopers stopped the car near Watkins.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was arrested and faces charges of:

  • DUI

  • Felony eluding

  • Child abuse (no injury)

  • Failure to use child restraint

  • Reckless endangerment

The child was removed from the vehicle unharmed, though CSP did not release further details about their status.

Since its launch in 1998, the *CSP program has received thousands of reports of dangerous driving. In 2024, troopers handled 54,956 total calls:

  • 30,779 for road rage or aggressive driving

  • 24,177 for suspected impaired driving
