Colorado Jury Convicts Man of Murdering Jewelry Store Owner During Robbery

A Colorado jury has found Charles Robinson Shay guilty of murdering jewelry store owner Peter Damian Arguello during a robbery in Wheat Ridge on November 29, 2023.

Police responded to Peter Damian Fine Jewelry & Antiques on W. 38th Avenue just after 11 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Witnesses said Arguello was fatally shot and collapsed in the parking lot behind the store.

Shay was convicted on 11 charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, and tampering with evidence. The habitual criminal designation serves as a sentence enhancer.

In Colorado, first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence without parole. Shay’s sentencing is set for September 10.

A second suspect, Michael McCormack, is scheduled to face trial on August 22 for his alleged role in the killing and burglary.
