Data from Ammoland News shows firearm homicides in Colorado have climbed significantly since the state began implementing stricter gun control laws in 2013.
Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012, Colorado lawmakers—led by Democrats—passed measures including bans on high-capacity magazines, universal background checks, fees for those checks, and allowing gun violence victims to sue firearm manufacturers for misuse of weapons.
The push for tighter regulations has continued. On April 10, 2025, Gov. Jared Polis signed one of Colorado’s most restrictive gun laws to date, banning the manufacture and heavily limiting the sale of certain semiautomatic rifles, shotguns, and specific gas-operated semiautomatic handguns with detachable magazines.
According to Ammoland News, the state recorded 86 firearm homicides in 2014 compared to 237 in 2023—an increase of over 175% during a decade of expanding gun restrictions.
The outlet concluded that the stricter laws “haven’t reduced gun-related violent crime” in Colorado.
