10 U.S. States Under Air Quality Alerts Due to Canadian Wildfires

Wildfires raging in Canada are having serious effects across the U.S., triggering air quality alerts in multiple states.

According to ABC News, ongoing fires north of the border have prompted red flag warnings in Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming, where conditions are ripe for wildfires of their own. In total, 10 U.S. states are currently under air quality alerts.

Canada is battling more than 700 active wildfires, with over 16 million acres already scorched—putting this season on track to become one of the most destructive in the country’s history.

This massive fire activity is sending thick smoke drifting into the U.S., affecting nearly every state that borders Canada—from Minnesota to Connecticut. While some cities like Boston, Detroit, and New York might escape the worst thanks to favorable winds, others aren’t so lucky.

“Air quality alerts are now in place for 10 states from Minnesota to Connecticut,” ABC News reported. “On Tuesday afternoon, Boston is expected to see a break from the smoke due to onshore winds. Detroit and New York City may also catch a break with winds from the east.”

Meanwhile, smoke is expected to remain moderate to heavy in areas stretching from Duluth to Green Bay, Buffalo, and the Hudson Valley, with lingering effects likely through Wednesday.

A Tough Year for Wildfires

Just six months ago, California finally got its wildfires under control after months of destruction and upheaval.

In the first eight months of this year alone, nearly half the U.S. has experienced wildfires. While many were small and quickly contained, others echoed the intensity of California’s crisis earlier in 2025.

Now, with thick smoke settling in and relentless heat waves continuing in several regions, experts warn that conditions are ideal for even more fire danger in the weeks to come.
