HAY SPRINGS, Neb. – A 49-year-old woman from Hay Springs is facing several charges after a car reported stolen in Colorado was found outside a local bar in Sheridan County.
Authorities arrested Shannon Barron, who now faces two felony charges—possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person—along with three misdemeanors: resisting arrest, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and DUI.
According to court documents, Englewood Police in Colorado notified Sheridan County on July 12 about a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek rented via Turo that was never returned. Working with the car’s owner, law enforcement tracked the vehicle as it left Chadron, Nebraska.
Deputies later found the car parked outside the Outlaw Bar and Saloon in Hay Springs. When a Sheridan County sergeant tried to arrest Barron, she allegedly refused to comply and resisted, prompting deputies to use a Taser.
Police reported that Barron appeared intoxicated and denied stealing the car. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded handgun near the driver’s seat, a switchblade knife with a 3¾-inch blade, marijuana, two syringes with suspected meth residue, and an open bottle of Fireball whiskey.
Due to her past felony convictions, Barron is legally barred from possessing firearms. She also allegedly refused blood alcohol testing at Chadron Community Hospital, where she was treated for a head injury from the arrest.
Though initially arrested for theft, Barron was not formally charged with stealing the car. Her next court appearance is set for August 21.
