Two adults died and a juvenile was injured Tuesday morning after a car crashed off Highway 550 in southwestern Colorado, plunging roughly 320 feet down Red Mountain Pass.
The crash occurred around 8 a.m. near mile marker 88, just south of Ouray, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Investigators said a silver Honda Civic veered off the shoulder and rolled down the mountainside, eventually landing upside-down in a river. Two adults were pronounced dead at the scene. A young female passenger was trapped in the wreckage.
Emergency crews rescued the juvenile at 11:27 a.m., and she was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
Southbound Highway 550 was shut down during the investigation and cleanup, with no estimated time for reopening.
The Colorado State Patrol urges anyone who witnessed the crash but hasn’t yet spoken to authorities to call dispatch at 970-249-4392.
