A 36-year-old man was arrested last month after he allegedly threatened two campers with an axe at a campground in southwestern Colorado.
On July 19, Saguache County sheriff’s deputies responded to 911 calls from the Penitente Campground, located about 10 miles northeast of Del Norte. Campers reported that a man had been rummaging through their belongings. Although he initially walked away, he continued to watch them from a distance.
As the campers attempted to leave in their vehicle, the man—later identified as Steven Sanguinetti—approached and began swinging an axe at them.
Deputies arrived shortly after and arrested Sanguinetti. He now faces several charges, including felony menacing, assault, harassment, and criminal impersonation. Authorities transported him to the Rio Grande County Jail in Del Norte.
According to Sheriff Anne Robinson, Sanguinetti also fought with detention deputies at the jail, leading to additional felony charges in a separate case.
Public records list his residence as Aurora.
