More than 3,000 Boeing employees in Missouri and Illinois walked off the job at midnight Monday, launching a strike after rejecting the company’s latest contract proposal.
Why Are They Striking?
The striking workers, represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 837 (IAM), say the walkout is about more than pay.
“This is about respect and dignity, not empty promises,” the union stated in a post on X.
Workers had overwhelmingly rejected Boeing’s revised contract offer, citing concerns over job security and scheduling flexibility. The strike affects Boeing facilities in St. Louis and St. Charles, Missouri, and Mascoutah, Illinois.
What Do These Workers Do?
IAM District 837 members build and maintain fighter jets, missile systems, and other critical defense technologies—including the F-15 and F/A-18 aircraft.
“They deserve nothing less than a contract that keeps their families secure and recognizes their unmatched expertise,” said IAM Midwest Territory VP Sam Cicinelli.
Boeing Responds
Boeing expressed disappointment over the strike.
“We’re disappointed our employees rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth and resolved their primary issue on alternative work schedules,” said Dan Gillian, VP of Air Dominance and senior executive in St. Louis.
Gillian added that Boeing has activated a contingency plan to keep operations running using non-striking employees.
What’s Next?
The previous contract expired just before midnight on July 27, and there’s no word yet on when negotiations will resume. With national defense programs on the line, the pressure is on for both Boeing and the union to reach a deal quickly.
